A Hortus Conclusus tapestry panel
Tournai, circa 1500-1525. Woven in silk and wool, the enclosed garden with a wattle fence and various animals and birds, a badger, a stag and a doe among them, and flowers including daisies, marigolds and pansies, with a rolling landscape beyond.
A similar tapestry, from the collection of L. Bernheimer, is illustrated in ‘Wandteppiche (I. Teil, Band 2): Die Niederlande’, Göbel, Heinrich, Leipzig 1923, no. 255. Other Hortus Conclusus tapestries may be found in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Rijksmuseum, and the Burrell.
