An 18th century embroidered cushion cover

England, circa 1700-1710.

Finely embroidered in silk in chain stitch, back stitch and French knots flat quilted onto a fine linen ground and coarser linen backing, with floral sprigs to each corner, and smaller examples set around the central lobed oval of flowering tendrils, on a ground embroidered with a scale pattern in yellow back stitch enclosed by a border of further trailing and flowering tendrils. The stylised flowers in blue and magenta perhaps intended for forget-me-nots, eglantine, violets and borage.

With small imperfections.

33.7cm (13¼”) high and 56.7cm (22¼”) wide.
