A velvet dossal
Made up in the 17th century of burgundy silk velvet and applied 15th century Netherlandish hood and orphrey bands from a cope, worked in silk and couched silver and gilt thread and metal spangles, the embroidery raised in places over leather padding. The hood with the seated Virgin of the Sign, the Child on her lap enveloped with a blazing aureole, and the orphreys to the sides each with three Apostles: on the left, James the Less, John the Evangelist, & Matthew; and, on the right, Paul, James the Greater, and Thomas. With a trellis fringe of gilt metal thread and red silk.
