A dalmatic of ‘Bizarre’ silk
The silk Italian, probably Venetian, circa 1700, with a ground of blue damask brocaded in silver thread and red silk with a design of stylised volutes and abstracted plant motifs. The dalmatic lined with plain blue silk and decorated with taffeta ribbons and later braid, and fitted with linen ties and metal hooks and eyes.
Provenance: By repute, a part of the collection of the Wrightson family until 1952, when sold at the auction of the contents of Cusworth Hall, South Yorkshire.
