An 18th century Scottish sampler

Embroidered in silk on an undyed fine linen ground, with a dog chasing a rabbit across the garden of a country house flanked by trees and with a hedge naturalistically worked in clipped threads. The bands above and below set with stylised trees and urns of flowers, and, at the bottom, the names ‘Robert Wind’ and ‘Janet Nicol’ embroidered with a heart between them and followed by further initials including ‘MW Age 15’, all within a border of trailing strawberries. Robert Wynd and Janet Nichol were both born in Perthshire in 1758, she in the village of Inchture, and were married in the same village on the 20th March 1778.

The sampler 44cm (17¼”) high and 34.2cm (13½”) wide.

Framed size 46.7cm (18⅜”) high and 37.3cm (14⅝”) wide.
