An English needlework picture

Second quarter of the 18th century

Worked in coloured silks and wools in fine tent stitch, French knots and bullion stitch with a shepherdess, her face worked in petit point, standing with her flower decorated staff in hand and her dog and a sheep with a floral garland beside her, amid rabbits, a butterfly and exotic birds in a rolling landscape with trees and a house beyond, the border of trailing flowers on an umber diaper stitched ground.

The needlework 64.7cm (25½”) high and 52.2cm (20½”) wide.

In a frame 75.9cm (30⅞”) high and 63cm (24¾”) wide.
